About RPS Railways

Auto Drive Solutions (ADS) has patented a disruptive positioning system called Radar Positioning System (RPS). A millimeter -wave radar reads information encoded in a plastic band that contains different one-centimeter segments of various thicknesses. The radar concentrates its energy over a square centimeter of the band, measuring the relative thickness of each segment. Each plastic segment is assigned with logic levels 1 or 0.

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF RPS TECHNOLOGY HAS DIRECT IMPACT ON:

DECREASE IN ACCIDENTS

RPS allows trains to be positioned with 1 meter accuracy with minimal modifications in the infrastructure, by placing plastic bands on the sleepers, every 10 km. The radar penetrates each plastic band to detect the positions of trains; a warning signal is generated for any trains travelling at inadequate speeds.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Accurate train location allows the trains to travel at optimal speed allowing savings of more than 10%. In a freight train this means a saving of more than 36K € per year.

INCREASE SECURITY

RPS is reliable under hostile conditions, due to radar readings being UNABLE to be interfered with.

IMPROVEMENT POSITIONING

RPS allows centimeter level accuracies in sections of a track of special interest.

INCREASED CAPACITY

Installing plastic balises in the sleepers close to the stations doubles the capacity of the ERTMS2 system due to the block section length (distance between balises) and the headway (separation of time between two consecutive trains) being insignificant in the bottleneck of the infrastructural, limiting capacity..

IMPROVED SPEED ACCURACITY

RPS is capable of measuring the average speed of a train along 10 meters with less than 1% error and with less than 0.1% error along 100 meters, in all types of weather conditions.

THE IDENTIFICATION OF TRACK IRREGULARITIES

RPS stores vibration patterns associated with train positions. Real time patterns are compared to stored patterns, generating an alarm when there is a significant difference between the two patterns.

RPS explores only 1cm of track, which allows sweeping or blowing systems to displace snow or sand on track surfaces, allowing for accurate balise reading.

THE REDUNDANCY OF SIGNALING SYSTEMS

Each RPS system consists of two independent sensors integrated into a single box of similar size to a shoebox. The box has a simple anchoring system, attached to the train with a single polarized connector. Unskilled personnel are able to undertake the replacement of the box therefore eliminating the need for a backup system.
